See you
in the snow.

Ten nights of crisp temple mornings, steaming onsen waters, and alpine snowfall.

THE WINTER ISSUE

Inside
the issue.

05 FEB / SHIRAKAWA-GO

Your snow
day.

About 50 minutes by bus each way from Takayama. Spend 4–5 hours in the village.

Reserve return transport. Viewpoint access depends on winter conditions. This is a daytime visit; no 2027 illumination booking is assumed.

Buses & reservations ↗Village guide ↗
07 FEB / SHINHOTAKA

Let the sky
decide.

Bus via Hirayu: allow roughly 1¾–2 hours each way from Takayama, plus 2–3 hours for the ropeway and views.

Check wind closures and the last bus before leaving. Keep February 8 as your weather backup. Bring warm layers, gloves and grippy waterproof shoes.

Ropeway status ↗Bus timetable ↗
ONE ROOM / TWO ADULTS

The useful
details.

Nine hotel nights at up to US$70, one inn night at up to US$100: US$730 lodging ceiling. Rates and availability for your dates are unverified; compare final totals including taxes.

Choose a double or twin with a private bathroom for hotel nights. Meals depend on the plan. Toyoko Inn currently lists breakfast included.

For the traditional night, check room-only plans. Hirayu no Mori has Japanese-style rooms and communal hot springs. Kuwataniya is a simpler minshuku with shared onsen bathing. Private baths and meals are not assumed.

Hirayu no Mori ↗Minshuku Kuwataniya ↗

If neither fits: keep the Takayama hotel and try Hirayu’s day-use onsen. Ask the hotel about luggage storage between stays.

A FEW PRACTICAL NOTES

Smooth
connections.

Arrival: Meitetsu to Nagoya, then Shinkansen to Kyoto. Leave time for immigration, bags and the station change.

February 4: Kyoto → Nagoya by Shinkansen → Takayama by Limited Express Hida. Allow roughly 3–4 hours station to station.

February 9: Return to Nagoya in daylight. On February 10, take a morning airport train; allow for the walk to Terminal 2 and the airline’s check-in requirements.

Durations are planning estimates. Recheck 2027 timetables before booking. Kyoto snow is possible, not guaranteed.
